Oceanside is a beautiful place to stay for a short vacation and the longer we’re here the more we realize that it’s time to go home. The beach is a great place to spend some time, even a lot of time, but I think, like most good things, the more you have of them the less you appreciate them. I have loved the time we have spent here in California, especially the first 6 weeks when we were traveling around to all the different sites. I have also really enjoyed the last couple of weeks exploring the towns around Oceanside and hanging around with Freddie, fishing and playing on the beach. Three weeks seems to be the perfect amount of time to get to know a place, and once that time is up it seems the perfect time to leave. We were in Oakland for three weeks and now we’ve been here for three weeks too. Six more days and we will pack our things and start our long trip back toward home.
Today was a great day—Freddie turned 3! And tomorrow Steve grows another year older as well. We kind of celebrated both of their birthdays together but I will try and make tomorrow exciting so that Steve doesn’t feel usurped since the last two years have been all about Freddie (maybe this year too?).

She also got a Richard Scarry book about “What People Do All Day”. These are her favorite books right now and she spends a lot of time figuring them out.
Her favorite breakfast (Steve’s too)—eggs and bacon.
We went to the mall (the weather wasn’t too great today) so Freddie could go for a ride on the carousel.
We had a party and cake of course. Since we’re away from home it was easier to just make one cake; 40 candles—37 for Steve and 3 for Freddie.

After dinner we went for a walk. A clown was spending some time outside too; the perfect ending to a birthday. Happy birthday Freddie!!! We love you!

This week is supposed to be hot and that means I can work on my tan before we leave (I’ve got to have something to show for all this California time). Then we will pack it all up say good-bye to the warm sunny days and hello to a rainy spring in Vancouver.
The first night of our trip back we will stay in San Francisco, then we will spend the next evening with Doug and Stephanie again in Ukiah (yay!). After that we will wind our way back though the Redwood Forest and head for Eugene Oregon. The last day will be a long one and will take us all the way to Kelowna. We are going to spend the last week of April there catching up with family and killing some time before the people sub-letting our place in Vancouver move out for May.1st. I can hardly wait to see our family and friends again, it’s been too long. See you in 1 week!!
